BASICODE 3, released in 1985, added color graphics, data reading/writing, and sound output. A booklet and cassette with Bascoders were published that same year, and the standard became popular in the German Democratic Republic, where programs were transmitted via radio from 1989. The final revision, BASICODE 3C, was a specific adaptation for the Commodore 64 introduced in 1991, adding monochrome graphics support. The project declined after 1990 due to the rise of 16- and 32-bit computers and complex graphical user interfaces.
